Greek in Greece study abroad 2020

This coming summer, May 21 - June 27, Ohio University and the University =
of Patras are offering their Greek in Greece study abroad program.=C2=A0
Greek in Greece offers students who have had one or more semesters of Anc=
ient Greek the opportunity to earn college credit for the equivalent of o=
ne semester=E2=80=99s further study of the ancient language.  Students wh=
o have not started ancient Greek can enroll in a first-semester course in=
 Ancient Greek offered by Ohio University Spring semester in real-time on=
line teleconference.
Students will also enroll in two other courses: An Introduction to Modern=
 Greek (offered by the Department of Philology at the University of Patra=
s) and Classical Mythology (offered by Ohio and Patras faculty).
We will spend the first three days in Athens visiting such renowned archa=
eological sites as the Acropolis, the Agora, the Theater of Dionysus as w=
ell as the splendid museums of the city. On May 24, we depart for the Uni=
versity of Patras.=20
Each of the weekends during our stay features an all-day trip to such des=
tinations as Delphi, Corinth, Mycenae, Olympia, and Epidaurus.=20
A few details about the curriculum:
=E2=80=A2You will be able to enroll in an Ancient Greek course appropriat=
e to your level: Beginning (for students who have already completed one s=
emester of Ancient Greek); Intermediate (for students with two or three s=
emesters); Advanced (for students with four semesters or more).  All leve=
ls emphasize immersive group work that enables students to progress more =
rapidly in the ancient language than is possible during the regular semes=
ter.=20
=E2=80=A2The course in modern Greek (3 credits) is offered by the Classic=
s faculty of the University of Patras, and has been designed especially f=
or ancient Greek students. It stresses ancient-modern continuities in the=
 language and is geared toward everyday communication about modern cultur=
e, entertainment, theater, cinema, and food and drink.=C2=A0
=E2=80=A2The myth course (3 credits) will be taught collaboratively by Oh=
io University and University of Patras faculty, and has a special focus o=
n myth and drama. We will visit ancient theaters and attend at least one =
modern professional production, staged in the beautifully-preserved theat=
er of Epidaurus.=C2=A0
An outstanding feature of the program (as program alumni enthusiastically=
 report) is the support offered by University of Patras student language-=
learning buddies. Not only are they available for help in the modern and =
ancient Greek classes, but they also provide our students a cordial entr=C3=
=A9e to life in Patras and in Greece. They will join us on on our weekend=
 excursions and on one or two additional half-day local outings.
Residence in Patras is at the Hotel Castello (http://www.castellohotel.gr=
/start), located immediately adjacent to the University of Patras campus.=
 Rooms have kitchenettes and garden terraces and are air-conditioned. Our=
 hotel in the heart of Athens=E2=80=99 archaeological district affords si=
milarly pleasant accommodations.
