ODBC as second layer of authentication

Hello, Our library serves two institutions using the same IT infrastructure and so we have two instances of EzProxy for our electronic resources. However, there are cases where students and staff can cross over the two institutions and this can cause a problem for us. Our current setup is using Active Directory and LDAP but we were thinking of doing a direct call to our student information system to determine what the actual status of the person is. Active Directory has everyone in different buckets and cannot always tell when a user is participating in both institutions. Our IT team thought that it would be possible to add an ODBC connection along with the existing LDAP setup to resolve our issue. Has anyone ever tried doing this? Any insight would be appreciated.
