Those LexisNexis staff who actually returned my calls say that they don’t know when IP authentication will be available for State Net. They offer username and password access, but you’re explicitly not allowed to post the username and password publicly, and it appears dead simple for anyone who has logged in to then change the password to something only they know. In addition, apparently only one user can access the database at a time.

I don’t see much option other than requesting a refund, which we will be doing for our renewal through NERL, but it remains a problem because several courses are dependent on data collected from State Capital. They have been able to get some of it from State Net so far (no one has yet messed with the password, knock on wood), but it’s obviously not a workable long-term solution.

I remain astounded that a well-established company like LexisNexis replaced an existing product with one that doesn’t offer IP authentication. I assume there must be some remarkable backstory about why they had to suddenly “retire” State Capital, but I haven’t heard it yet.
