The need to notify all vendors about a change in IPs is why we have been working with The IP Registry<http://theipregistry.org/> prior to selecting a new authentication system – we have ensured that our institution, and our campuses, are properly represented in the registry, and we will be encouraging all content providers to consider tracking our IPs through The IP Registry. It certainly won’t be a requirement, of course, and we know that we will have a lot of work ahead of us to get ALL vendors to add our new hosted IP, but it will simplify the process for at least some.

Right now, 20 different content providers are tracking our IPs through the registry. We haven’t gotten a new IP address from OCLC yet, so haven’t started encouraging vendors to use the IP Registry, but I hope to see a significant increase in how many use it to keep their IPs straight.

Regarding the change in starting point URLs, you have two options.

If you choose to manage wildcard certificates yourself, then you can keep your existing URL for off-campus access. You will be responsible for changing the underlying IP address that’s associated with that URL, from your local proxy server to the IP address assigned by OCLC. This does require a bit of extra management (and cost for the certificates) by the library. If you go this route, you’ll notify the DNS network that the IP address for, say, proxy.library.institution.edu, is now OCLC’s assigned IP. All of your resources will go to the new IP as soon as the updates have propagated through the DNS network, and those vendors who haven’t yet added the new OCLC IP will fail to provide access.

Or, you can let OCLC assign you a new URL (say, institution.proxy.oclc.org) for your access, and you can run both servers at the same time for a while. You can then shift your resources slowly, as you check each one to ensure the vendor has added OCLC’s IP address to the range they’re maintaining for you. OCLC manages the shift and the costs associated with that, but of course you will then need to update every LibGuide and link that went to the old site.

Each option has pros and cons associated with it.

You also need to notify every IP authenticated vendor that you have an additional IP address which should be considered as "on campus".

Best,

Laszlo.

We’ve just requested a quote from OCLC for EZproxy Hosted. I’ve been told by the Orders group that EZproxy Analytics is not yet available for quote but should be “later in FY 20.” I’ve also been told that the switch to hosted will require that your starting point URLs be changed. For us that will mean making the change on our website, LibGuides, informing faculty who have proxied URLs in Blackboard, etc.

I also want to know the OCLC-hosted libraries' experience.

Thank you!
