Re: ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS from Atypon Literatum sites

We are getting this too, mostly with Taylor & Francis, also with Wiley, Edinburgh University Press (which is also on Literatum) and Gale’s Sabin Americana (which, AFAIK, is not on Literatum).

We are still running EZproxy 6.4.4, so it doesn’t look like it’s related to the EZproxy version.

I have several colleagues who are getting very frustrated with the problem (we proxy on campus). One says that if she deletes cookies, she may get only one link that works ok before the problem starts again. I can’t get the problem to happen on my PC.

Using Chrome’s F12 dev tools on a colleague’s PC, I have seen all the redirects, which mirror what you see in ezproxy.log. Any ideas as to what else I can look for using the dev tools?

Hi Laurence – we’ve had an increase in this message too. Users who report it are usually using an Apple device or using Chrome (over 50% of our users).  Clearing cookies usually does solve the problem. Today I’ve recommended a member of staff, who is working from home and is getting the error to add this to the cookies setting

“Clear on exit”  = [*.]ezproxy.herts.ac.uk

I know, in the past, on this list people have said there is a limit to how many cookies a domain can set, and the length of the cookie header can be too long, and this causes problems

I’m haven’t ID’d it as a Atypon problem though – but that’s something to consider/investigate. Like you – I cannot replicate the problem!

This might be a long shot, but has anyone had reports of problems accessing Wiley Online Library, Taylor and Francis Online or other sites hosted on Atypon Literatum recently, where the user gets ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS in Chrome or similar in other browsers?

We suddenly started getting reports of this in the last couple of weeks, and checking the EZproxy logs, I see those sites returning repeated HTTP status 302 redirects to the same URL. I suspect that it’s a problem with cookies because it only effects some users, but once it starts happening to them, it keeps happening. So I’m advising users to clear the cookies, or open links in an incognito window, which I think is working for them, although you know how it is, you don’t always get to hear what the outcome was. I haven’t been able to reproduce the problem myself.

I wondered whether the start of the problem coincided with upgrading to EZproxy 6.5.2, but instead I found that the problems started very distinctly on Saturday 15th June for Wiley, and Monday 8th July for T&F, but had been happening on other Literatum sites before that.

Atypon of course said it must be a problem our EZproxy configuration, so it would be really useful to have corroborating evidence to show that it is at least partly a problem with Literatum so that Atypon will help find a solution.
