Again, Suvadeep is right. In addition, you will always hear about people
who got funding at some point of time or the other. However, these are very
rare nowadays. Understandably, in the past, especially, when not this many
students were applying, funding did come by easier. Clearly, it has become
a business model to take on MS students to offset costs elsewhere. You have
to understand that academia is the last to recover when the economy comes
back. The current recovery in the US is very slow, very unlike all recorded
recessions since the Great Depression (earlier recoveries were simply not
recorded). Things are very risky, given how Europe is wallowing in its own
economic mess and dragging the world economy.

What this means is that, some schools are having issues coming up with
salaries for their own tenured Professors. All this is improving of course,
but till then, the worst case scenario is that you will need loans to pay
for your education. Loans from Indian banks are becoming more available and
given how Indian banks treat customers and other factors, this is a risk
you must weigh well before you take the next steps. My job here is not to
scare you, but make you aware of what you will face, very clearly. Be
assured that tens of thousands of students come to Grad school, and many
that choose wisely (good, well ranked schools and programs that will
prepare you for a career) and do just fine! Plus, we are here to help in
