Why is that? We=92re often in such a hurry to make a decision on each answe= r choice that we make our decisions within the first 5-10 words of a choice without being patient and hearing the whole thing out. A savvy question creator =96 and rest assured that the GMAT is written by several of those = =96 will use this against you, embedding something early in an answer choice and baiting you into a bad decision. At Veritas Prep, we refer to this as one of two elements of the testmaker toolkit: *=94Hide the Right Answer=94 and *=94Sell the Wrong Answer=94 Consider this in a Sentence Correction question: Immanuel Kant=92s writings, while praised by many philosophers for their brilliance and consistency, are characterized by sentences so dense and convoluted as to pose a significant hurdle for many readers interested in his works. A) so dense and convoluted as to pose B) so dense and convoluted they posed C) so dense and convoluted that they posed D) dense and convoluted enough that they posed E) dense and convoluted enough as they pose This is a classic example of a hybrid =93Hide the Right Answer=94 / =93Sell= the Wrong Answer=94 technique that preys on people=92s desire to make a quick decision early in the answer choice. People do not like the (correct, but lesser-used) structure =93so X that Y=94, so they often eliminate A (the =93hidden right answer=94) for C (the =93sold wrong answer=94) because they= prefer =93so X that Y=94. But the real decision to be made here isn=92t one of sen= tence structure (both structures in A and C are correct) but rather one of verb tense (this is all ongoing, so =93posed=94 in B, C, and D must be wrong=94. Amazingly, very few students even get to the point at which they=92ll notic= e the verb tense difference in pose/posed, having been so effectively drawn to the =93false decision point=94 to the left. Those who are patient will b= e rewarded with a verb tense difference =96 one you should study quite a bit = in practice =96 but many simply cannot help themselves and make their decision too early, too hastily, too far to the left-hand side of the screen. Consider another example, this time from Critical Reasoning: Citizen: Each year since 1970, a new record has been set for the number of murders committed in this city. This fact points to the decreasing ability of our law enforcement system to prevent violent crime. City Official: You overlook the fact that the city=92s population has risen steadily since 1970. In fact, the number of murder victims per 100 people has actually fallen slightly in the city since 1970. Which one of the following, if true, would most strongly counter the city official=92s response? A. The incidence of fraud has greatly increased in the city since 1970. B. The rate of murders in the city since 1970 decreased according to the age group of the victim, decreasing more for younger victims. C. Murders and other violent crimes are more likely to be reported now than they were in 1970. D. The number of law enforcement officials in the city has increased at a rate judged by city law enforcement experts to be sufficient to serve the city=92s increased population. E. If the health care received by assault victims last year had been of the same quality as it was in 1970, the murder rate in the city last year would have turned out to be several times what it actually was. In this problem, the official=92s conclusion is basically a direct contradiction of the previous claim that =93you are not adequately preventi= ng violent crime=94, and he bases his contradiction on the fact that, hey look= , the murder rate has gone down. His argument effectively reads: Premise: The murder rate has gone down Conclusion: Therefore we have done a good job preventing violent crime In an effort to weaken his conclusion, you want to find a choice that exploits the gap =93murder isn=92t the only type of violent crime=94 =96 yo= u want an answer that shows that another type of violent crime, or violent crime overall, is up. And here=92s where patience pays off (and haste hurts you): Answer choice E does exactly what we want, showing that people are being violently assaulted at a high rate, they=92re just not dying. The murder ra= te is down, but not because violent crime is down but instead because healthcare is preventing the victims from dying. But hasty test-takers only see =93If the health care=85=94 and think that this answer choice is way ou= t of scope. Why would health care be important in a discussion of crime?! Again, patience is the key here =96 the testmaker knows that it can =93Hide= the Right Answer=94 by taking 10-12 words to get to the main point, and those o= f us racing to make our decisions quickly won=92t have enough presence of min= d to let it develop. So take these lessons from the testmaker=92s toolkit =96 the authors of har= d questions will bet that you=92ll work too quickly, make your decisions too far to the left-hand side of the screen, and miss the crucial part of the effective decision. The GMAT isn=92t a one-shot deal. It does mean, though, that you should select and, more importantly, prepare for your test date carefully. But, beyond application deadlines, how do you determine for when to schedule your test? Try this out. Select your test date by setting a study schedule for yourself, then finding when the test naturally falls in your preparation, accounting for other major items on your calendar, of course. So, command-tab over to your calendar, open that day planner, and let=92s get scheduling! *Step one:* Veritas Prep=92s curriculum is divided into twelve lessons. Determine how many days you need to work through each lesson=92s homework, check it, revi= ew the problems that you found difficult, learn why you missed the questions that you got wrong, and readdress any skills or strategies you think would be helpful. Remember that homework problems have benefits beyond just completing the work. It=92s important to learn from each problem. Two thoughts on how to do that: First, as you are working through homework problems, star the difficult ones. Revisit them to determine why they were difficult for you, review the skill tested, and make sure you are comfortable with the strategy used in the question (=93Oh! This was a 5-12-13 triangle. I didn=92t see that,= and it unlocks the question. I should remember to search circles for hidden triangles in future problems.=94). Also, revisit the problems you missed to determine why you got them wrong. Specifically, into what testmaker trap did you fall (=93Oh! This was a strengthen question, and I selected the weaken answer choice.=94)? Remembe= r, learning from a missed problem is a valuable opportunity. A critical part of completing the homework is learning from your mistakes. *Step two:* Take a look at your calendar to gauge when work will be busy, when you plan to travel, and when other events that may take up study time are scheduled, then just map out your plan. For example, =93I need four days to work on Arithmetic. I have plans Saturday, but I could devote Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night, and Sunday to feeling confident in Arithmetic.=94 *Step three:* After finding this natural test date, to be safe, build in a few days as a buffer to ensure that unexpected work or social plans don=92t derail your schedule. Once you have your schedule set, stick with it! You will benefit from your perseverance on test day. Finally, be confident when you take your test! You have worked hard to prepare.
