Barents Press Russia conducts variety of training programs


Barents Press Russia is a unique cross-border journalists' training
organization that covers a vast geographical area, encompassing different
societies, the Nordic countries, Russia, and some indigenous peoples. This
year, it has undertaken a varied list of activities.

A seminar in investigative journalism was held in Stockholm, with 15
journalists participating from Murmansk, Archangel, and Carelia. The seminar
was held in cooperation with The Institute for Further Education of
Journalists of Sweden (FOJO).

A radio course was held in Tromsoe, in cooperation with Norsk Lokal
Radioforbund and the Nordic Journalism Center (NJC). Nine journalists from
Murmansk, Archangel, Carelia, from both from private and state radio, were
enrolled.

In cooperation with NJC, BP Norway, and Interjour (Petersburg) held a
seminar on public relations and journalism in St Petersburg for 19
journalists and PR specialists from Carelia.

Among the plans for the summer is a Master Class for six young journalists
from the Barents region on June 26 to 28.

Planned for later in the year are a Nordic Conference, a radio training
course, and conferences on journalist-editor relationships.

In August, five Russian journalists from Murmansk, Archangelsk, Carelia and
St. Petersburg will attend the Nordic Conference. In September, a radio
course for nine journalists from Murmansk, Archangel, Carelia will be held
in Kirkenes, Vadsoe, and Vardoe. The same month, a seminar on "Physical
Boarders, Mental Barriers" will be held for the journalists from Finnmark in
Zapolyarny (Russia). Later, in the St. Petersburg area, a seminar is planned
on "Journalist - Editor: How to Create an Effective Team."

In October 20, Russian journalists and 10 representatives from the regional
authorities will participate in the conference "Media and Power," in Pitea,
Sweden. This conference was suggested by the Swedish Foreign Ministry and
organized by FOJO.

The year will end with the seminar "PR and Journalism" for Archangel
journalists and public relations specialists in December.
