Russian journalism center publishes new guide to war reporting

The Moscow-based Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations (CJES) has
published a new Russian-language guide for reporters working in war zones in
and near the former Soviet Union, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)
reported.

The new guide, available online at the CJES Web site, includes legal,
psychological, and medical advice for journalists, and practical information
on the background, traditions, and customs of various "hot spots" in the
region. Several journalists recount their experiences and offer useful
advice for reporters covering areas such as Chechnya, Nagorno-Karabagh,
Afghanistan, and Abkhazia.

CJES director Oleg Panfilov said that in the past there were no adequate
guides for Russian war reporters on how to behave and act in order to
survive conflict situations. While several recommendations have been
published in recent years by organizations, such as CPJ and Reporters sans
frontieres (RSF), they were always geared to reporters from other countries,
covering conflicts far from Russia and the former countries of the Soviet
Union.

In a preface to the new guide, Panfilov expresses his hope that the new book
will offer useful information and advice from a Russian or regional
perspective, helping war reporters return safely to their homes.
