Rolex Awards to Recognize Enterprising Efforts to Improve World

Aimed at fostering a spirit of enterprise around the world, the Rolex Awards
are designed to recognize pioneering concepts and innovative thought by
giving individuals the means to achieve an important undertaking.

The Rolex Awards for Enterprise support outstanding initiatives in the
following key areas of human endeavor science and medicine; technology and
innovation; exploration and discovery; the environment; and cultural
heritage. Projects may be submitted in almost any area of activity though,
provided that they expand knowledge of our world, improve the quality of
life on the planet, or contribute to the betterment of humankind. Anyone of
any age or from any country can apply for the award.

The Rolex Awards provide financial assistance to people who want to
implement concrete working projects. Applicants must submit projects that
are envisaged for the future or that have been completed in part. Completed
work, or projects that will be finished when the awards are presented in
autumn 2004, cannot be considered.

In judging applications, the award selection committee will determine
primarily whether the candidates show exceptional spirit of enterprise.
Projects are also judged on the basis of their feasibility, originality, and
potential impact on the world and on society. The five applicants whose
projects are deemed the most outstanding will each receive $100,000, a gold
Rolex chronometer, and international publicity. Up to five other individuals
whose projects are judged to be particularly promising will each receive a
cash award and a steel and gold chronometer and will be honored in their
home countries.

Applications to the 2004 Awards are accepted in stages, by geographical
region. Deadlines are as follows: May 31, 2003 for projects from Asia, the
Pacific, and the Middle East; July 31, 2003 for projects from Africa, North,
Central, and South America; and September 30, 2003 for projects from Western
and Eastern Europe.
