Call for Student Papers: GDN Fourth Annual Conference

Undergraduate students age 25 years and under are invited to compete for a
place at GDN's Fourth Annual Global Development Conference. The Conference
is scheduled to be held in Cairo, Egypt from Sunday, January 19 until
Tuesday, January 21, 2003.

You are required to submit to GDN ([email protected]) a paper of no more
than 1,500 words on the topic: Globalization and Equity ­ the theme of the
conference. Only nationals of developing or transition country are eligible
to apply. Applicants must be undergraduate students of no more than 25
years of age, currently enrolled and in good standing in a recognized
university. Entries must be received by September 30, 2002. The best ten
entries will be selected.

The ten finalists will be invited to attend the conference. GDN will cover
the costs of your round-trip economy ticket and accommodation at the
conference venue. Each finalist will be required to attend sessions and
summarize session highlights. A prize will be given for the best all-round
undergraduate and will be announced at the same time as the GDN Global
Awards for Research and Projects.

GDN Fourth Annual Conference

The Government of Egypt will be the official host of Globalization and
Equity, to be held in Cairo at the Conrad Hotel, January 19-21, 2003. The
conference will be preceded by three workshops scheduled for January 16-17,
2003. In addition to addressing the participants in the opening plenary,
His Excellency, Atef Ebeid, Prime Minister of Egypt, has agreed to lead a
panel of policy makers in a discussion on "Coping with Issues of
Globalization." It is expected that 500 participants will be in attendance,
including high-level representatives of the World Bank and policymakers
from within and without the region.

The Governing Body of the Global Development Network (GDN) has chosen
Globalization and Equity as the theme for the Fourth Annual Global
Development Conference. Since the finalists of the third round of the
Global Development Awards will present their research at this conference,
the five topics proposed for the awards are consistent with this theme.
Under each topic, GDN welcomes submissions from all branches of the social
sciences. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions are
particularly encouraged. The five topics, described in detail below, are:
(i) Growth, inequality, and poverty
(ii) Trade and foreign direct investment
(iii) Education, knowledge, and technology
(iv) Financial markets
(v) Health, environment, and development.
