  Are you an active member of an environmental NGO? Are you looking to study
in a multi-cultural atmosphere? Then maybe the Training for Young
Environmental Leaders is for you!

In order to improve the capacity and skills of young environmentalists from
Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Newly Independent States (NIS), and
their NGOs to deal with organisational and management problems, as well as
other obstacles which have prevented them from being as effective as
possible, the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe
(REC) established the Training for Young Environmental Leaders.
The program is designed to develop:

Management capabilities;
Abilities to overcome cultural and national differences through intensive
work in a multicultural environment;
Knowledge of new approaches and solutions to environmental problems (e.g.,
use of modern information technologies, or market based solutions);
Training skills.
Participants follow a four-week program of integrated and interactive
workshops which address the particular needs of the region and its younger
NGO members, with training in fields like: NGO and project management,
campaign strategy, media-work, communication skills, fundraising, public
participation in environmental decision-making, business plans for NGOs,
NGOs and civil society, new approaches to solving environmental problems,
and much more.

The training programme involves interactive group work and individual
activities - including hands-on training that produces practical results.
The young leaders develop products tailored to their individual needs, such
as project proposals and funding strategies, press releases and community
action plans.

Eligibility
We are seeking participants from a variety of backgrounds and from
throughout CEE, NIS and other countries. They should be between 20 and 30
years old, show a strong commitment to improving the environmental situation
in the CEE region, be active in an environmental NGO, have citizenship in
one of the participating countries, and speak and write English well.
Participants spend four weeks at the REC Head Office in Szentendre, Hungary.
The REC will cover all costs related to travel, food, training fees and
accommodation for the CEE and NIS participants.

For the 2002 sessions, the REC is inviting participants from:

CEE: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia and Yugoslavia;
NIS: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova,
Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
Participants from other countries (in particular Turkey, Malta and Cyprus)
are also invited but are responsible for covering their own costs and fees.

Application content
If you are interested in our program, submit your application in English
(email, letter or fax), including the following information and materials:

Your motives for applying to this program;
Your expectations from the program, i.e., what you hope to achieve;
The project you wish to develop for your NGO during the training period;
The session(s) to which you are applying (we encourage you to apply for more
than one period);
A letter of support from the Director/Chairperson of your NGO, explaining
the reasons for recommending you for the training and how the NGO will
benefit; and
Your curriculum vitae (CV) in English, containing:
- Family name and given names
- Full mailing address (the permanent address should also be specified if
different from the mailing address)
- Telephone number (where you can be reached during the day)
- Fax number and e-mail address
- Nationality
- Date and place of birth
- Passport number
- Education and field of specialization
- Work and other relevant experience
- Computer skills
- Knowledge of English and other foreign languages (indicate fair, good or
poor)
- Name, address, telephone and fax number of your NGO
- Information about your NGO
- Description of your activities at the NGO
Note: The application must include ALL the items listed above and be
submitted by the deadline.

Selection process
All applications are screened by the REC to identify potential participants.
A brief telephone interview with each candidate is then conducted for the
final selection.
