> National Endowment for the Humanities Collaborative Research Fellowship:
Fellows receive up to $40,000 to conduct research in Eurasian or
East-Central Europe for four to nine months with a collaborator in the
region. Applicants may request contact information from American Councils or
NCEEER for potential research collaborators. Open to U.S. post-doctoral
scholars in the humanities and most social sciences. Funded by the National
Endowment for the Humanities. Application deadline: February 15, 2003.

> Special Initiatives Fellowship: Central Asia. Fellows receive up to
$35,000 for policy-relevant research in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.  Applicants must; hold a Ph.D. in a policy
relevant field; have held an academic research position for at least five
years; and intend to conduct research in the region for at least four
months. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, Program for the Study of
Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union.
Application deadlines: October 1, 2002 (Spring Program); January 15, 2003
(Summer, Fall, Academic Year Programs).

nine-month research trips to Eurasia. Fellowships include round-trip
international travel, housing, living stipends, visas, insurance,
affiliation fees, archive access, research advising, and logistical support.
Typical awards: $5,000 to $25,000. Open to graduate students, post-doctoral
scholars, and faculty. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, Program for
the Study of Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet
Union. Application deadlines: October 1, 2002 (Spring Program); January 15,
2003 (Summer, Fall, Academic Year Programs).

approximately eight hours per week of advanced language instruction for
three to nine months. Fellowships include round-trip international travel,
housing, tuition, living stipends, visas, insurance, affiliation fees,
archive access, research advising, and logistical support in the field.

weeks of summer study at Moscow State University.  Courses include advanced
Russian language, culture, literature and pedagogy.  Participants receive a
one-day orientation in Washington, DC; round-trip international airfare;
housing; insurance; weekly living stipends; and visas. Open to teachers of
Russian at all levels and graduate students who intend to pursue a teaching
career; participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Funded by
the U.S. Department of Education. Application deadline: March 1, 2003.

> Central Europe Summer Language Program: Offers international airfare,
tuition, insurance, and living stipends to graduate students for up to three
months of intensive language study at major universities throughout
East-Central Europe and the Baltic states. Funded by the U.S. Department of
State, Program for the Study of Eastern Europe and the Independent States of
the Former Soviet Union. Application deadline: January 15, 2003.
