Dear colleagues


In January, along with my British colleagues Fiona McLean I visited most of you to find out more about the NGO sector in Armenia. This visit was arranged from London by the British East-West Centre as part of a South Caucasus project and so the visit to Armenia was followed up with visits to Georgia and Azerbaijan.


The British-East West Centre's (BEWC) project is two fold: one element will concentrate on legal issues surrounding the European Court of Human Rights and will involve young lawyers; the second element will cover capacity training for NGOs and will involve representatives from NGOs, particularly those NGOs working in the field of human rights. This is the part of the project that I am responsible for.


The NGO training programme will run as follows: 


Two trainers will be invited to come to London and will ideally be English speakers; these will be the only two people from each of the three countries (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan) that will need to have good English skills.


Once these six people have spent a week on the training workshop in London, they will return to their respective countries to train a group of six other trainers. This means that for each country there will be a team of eight trained trainers. The training of trainers in each country will quite probably take place in the capital city.


Once the training of the trainers has been completed, they will then be responsible for delivering an NGO 'Capacity Utilisation' training workshop for approximately twenty to twenty-five participants. The content of this workshop will be developed with their help during the week long trip to London. However, based on feedback from NGOs I have already met in each country, some of the key issues covered will include networking, project cycle management, advocacy, sustainability and strategic planning. Please note that the training workshop will not be about how to access funds from western organisations (although fundraising will inevitably form part of the sustainability element of the training programme).

 We want to concentrate on working with regionally based NGOs and will be running the workshop for the twenty or so participants in a region outside of the capital city of each country. Our emphasis therefore will be on accepting invitations from NGO representatives who can show a commitment to working in the regions and an ability to continue sharing their training experience with others once the BEWC project has finished.
