DIRTY MONEY; NOURISHING POVERTY AND TERRORISM

WHAT NEXT ON THE AGENDA?


The outflow of criminal, corrupt and commercial dirty money from
developing  and transitional economies, estimated in the hundreds of
billions of
dollars  annually, damages employment, income, health and education for the
global   poor. The mechanisms by which such money passes through the
international  financial system sustain similar channels used by terrorists
to
finance  attacks  on life and property. Yet, the United States and Europe
remain  legally open to and facilitate the inflow of many forms of foreign
proceeds  which are illegally  earned and illegally transferred. Is it time
to
put the  whole of the global dirty- money problem on the table for action?

After the conference issue has been posed, the morning will be
devoted  to  presentations and audience questions. Confirmed speakers
include
Robert  Morgenthau, Richard Newcomb, George Vojta and Raymond Baker. Invited
speakers include Senator Carl Levin and Senator Paul Wellstone.
Father Bryan  Hehir of Catholic Charities USA will speak at lunch, hosted by
Charito  Kruvant of Creative Associates International. The afternoon will
offer two  in-depth panel discussions: Who's Doing What? and Options for
Further
Action. Confirmed participants include Elise Bean from the Senate's
Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Doug Freedman from UBS
Warburg,  Jeremy Pope from London and William Laufer from Wharton. Please be
prepared to offer your own comments as to appropriate actions to meet this
challenge.

This will be an important event focusing high-level attention on a
