Many of you have tried out our portal during the past two weeks. I have
received much valuable feedback. Here are a few short news items about
some changes which have been made to the site since last Monday:
* Researchers can now do two things that kids cannot do on the site: add
ToonTalk tools under the Tools tab, and edit the presentations of the
different Topic Groups and Schools. I have made the following accounts
into researchers:
Ken, Minehaha, Raquel, Sofia, alunojf,
augusto, choyles, gordon, iliana,
jesperh, jfmatos, luigiSarti, michele,
paulafelix, rnoss, yish, ylva
If you're not on the list but would like to be, please contact me.
* In the first version which I announced two weeks ago, there was a slot
in the left column of the site called "Advanced interface". The advanced
interface provides a means to handle the objects which have been added
to a directory. This functionality is still present, but it has been
moved to the right hand side of the interface. It is expressed as a
small folder icon. Clicking this link takes you to the advanced
interface. To get back to the regular view, you can click the document
icon. Note that these icons are only present if you have the rights to
edit the object you're viewing.
* A support for topic groups is now in place. Under "Preferences"
(which one finds under "Home), the user can select to which groups she
wants to be associated. Likewise, the user can choose to which topic
group a certain report should belong. The choice of topic group of a
report is limited to the topic groups the user has chosen to be part of.
Analogously, a user can choose to be associated with a school. Right now,
the only two schools are Eriksbegsskolan in Sweden and The South Camden
CLC in England, but please contact me if you would like to add a school.
Under the Groups tab, you can browse the different groups. As a
researcher, you can also change the presentation of each group, as well
as the image which represents the group on the Group tab. This
presentation can easily be made in any language you choose, as there is
support for multiple language versions.
* Email notification of newly published reports is now in place. Whenever
a report is published, an email notification about this fact is sent to
everyone in the same topic group. Under the Preferences tab, one can
turn this feature off if one does not want to receive the emails.
* I have added a message tool to the site. This tool consists of two boxes
on the left hand side of the interface. The first box shows other users
who are logged in to the site. Clicking on the small envelop icon of
a user, one can write a message to him or her. The second box shows
received messages.
* Full support for translations of the interface is in place, and it
is very easy to translate it. The site is now fully translated into
Swedish, and work is being done on the Portuguese and Italian
translations. Please contact me if you would like to help translating
the interface into your language.
* A few minor details have been added to the interface: a search field, a
"email this page to a friend"-button, and a "print this page"-button. A
Help tab has also been added, where I intend to keep instructions about
how to use the site. Navigation has been improved through links to
reports and blab of each user on his or her home page.
* Apart from numerous small improvements and bug fixing, the two major
functionalities which remain to be implemented is a better support for
detailed report comments, and a support for report templates. I will add
these during the next few weeks.
As always, I'd be very happy to receive feedback from you on anything from
improvement suggestions to bug reports or questions about using the site.
Enjoy!
Jesper
