Yes, the fact that an email address is required at the registration is a bug
in Plone which is too deep for me to fix. The best solution is to supply any
address, and then erase it on the "Preferences" page. Please ask your kids
to do this if you can.

There are two reasons why having an empty address is better than having a
false one:

      1. As Yishay mentioned in another mail, we plan to change the
         notifications about new content so that a site message is created
         if the user has an empty email address. This does not yet work,
         but it soon will.

      2. Having a false email address leads to bouncing emails when
         notifications are sent out. There is no way for the system to
         know that an address is false.

Yes, I think Yishay's idea with an envelope icon is good. Unless someone
comes up with a less ambiguous text.
