There's a thread of discussion going on recently about the possibility 
of basing web-reports on Plone (http://www.plone.org) rather then on 
JSPWiki. I thought its about time to bring this issue out in the open.

Short recap of previous chapters:
Jesper has been recruited by the Swedish WebLabs team to boost the 
webreports infrastructure.  Jesper is experienced in Python and Zope, 
and proposed using Plone. He quickly set up a demo that satisfies quite 
a few of our requirements. Jesper has promised to soon announce a new, 
richer demo.  Then we will have to decide on which path we take.

The note below is the last one Jesper sent on this topic. I will respond 
to it separately.

Just to follow up on what Jakob said: I believe there will always be a
need for a developer with some programming experience to maintain and
develop the site, regardless of the solution we choose, unless we settle
for the most basic of functionality. In my opinion, learning Python and
Zope would be close to trivial for any developer with experience in Java
programming (or Perl, C++, C#, ...). Some time and some motivation would
be required, of course. On a higher level, anyone can learn how to
administrate the site and its content.

As for what Zope/Plone cannot do, I see no limitations whatsoever, given
the restraint of a web based application. Whatever you can do in any
other web-application framework, you can also do in Zope. Plone does
impose some limitations in that it enforces a certain structure on the
content and the workflow, but this should rather be considered an
advantage, as I see it. It is true that the platform is not the fastest
and leanest possible, but for the amount of users we envision, it is
certainly adequate.

Jakob and I are now working on a more detailed plan for what needs to
be implemented. On my list of things to worry about, there are now
very few technological items, meaning that what needs to be
considered are more detailed user cases, i.e. more exact descriptions
of what scenarios we need to support. As for stability and technology
support, very few things still need to be sorted out. One example:
you can now get an email notification when you publish a report on the
site. Naturally, we don't want it to work like that; the user doesn't need
to be notified about changes she has done himself. However, sending the
email serves as proof of concept - it can be done, and we now just need to
specify when and to whom the emails are to be sent.

Let me pose this naive question to the group: what do you consider the
strengths of the Wiki? Especially in the perspective of kids using it,
what would you say we loose if we instead go with the Plone solution? 

One more thing: I have to take down the server tonight. It will be back up
on Monday morning. Hope you can all live without it until then ;-).
