About a week ago, display-related assertions have been disabled by default (after being enabled for a month or so). There have been tests in there that check that cursor movement makes positive progress. So it sounds very much like "the only odd thing" would have been exactly what made Emacs crash when the assertions were enabled. I have been one person asking to disable the assertions, since this kind of bug is easier to analyze if Emacs just behaves strange instead of crashing. It is known that the problem is in the "reseat*" routines which don't necessarily make progress when in images. This will probably be fixed at a later time. -- David Kastrup, Kriemhildstr. 15, 44793 Bochum
