There was/is actually a page or two showing how v3 functions mapped to v2 functions.  That made all the difference for me; I never could have made the transition without it.

v2 had reasonable documentation and the ideas mostly carry over, but not necessarily the function names, so for this you are right--- a new user approaching BBDB has quite an uphill battle, and might turn to the org-contacts address book or some other alternative.  EBDB was coming along until Eric disappeared from the scene.  There is also HyRolo and maybe others within the Emacs ecosystem.  But having conquered BBDB I now depend upon it and as I've often said you can do amazing things with it.
