It means that you first should ask yourself the question what your goal
is.  I assume it is not starting a war, or ask Google about starting a
war in the most secure way?

Handling privacy is always weighing what is important to you against
effort.  That's why the solution is different for different people.
But we don't want to discuss this here in this list.  Wrong list.

Take some time and read a lot of stuff there to get a feeling for the
matter.  That would be my advice.  Because there is definitely no "I
just do this today and then I'm done once and for all" solution anyone
could offer here.

And BTW, for using a VPN you have to select a provider (a company) that
you trust.  It is typically a kind of service you pay for.
