Unfortunately because of WIPO (The World Intellectual Property Organization) US trademarks can (and must) now be enforced/defended everywhere... else you can lose the trademark. Sun's Lawyer's letter was not at all unresonable... they simply asked that the "Java" trademark be acknowledged... now if JDEE were a program pertaining to Coffee or the country of Java Sun wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Trademarks are granted for very narrow uses... this was not Sun trying to rough anyone up.. they're just protecting their business.
