Thanks Mike your suggestion sounds like another solution. As I said, the final .xemacs/init.el fragment given below does load JDEE without errors for Xemacs 21.4.20. Even the JDE and JDB docs on the menus work (they didn't with the JDEE that comes with cygwin). This combination at least is apparently compatible.
