Maybe this can happen if the original post was held back at some mail
relay not able to pass the message on when it arrived and waiting for
the retry time to be reached while the answer to the original post can
be passed on immediately.  Honestly I don't know if something can
happen because at least the Exim documentation states that retry hints
are saved per address.  Maybe other MTAs handle this differently.

Maybe an increased amount of spam is also the reason for the current
delays.

Yep.  Actually one of the reasons why I haven't been pushy about
moving the mailing list to gnu.org was the speed of the AUCTeX mailing
list.  Until about a week ago you got a "reflection" of a post nearly
instaneously.

I have the following in ~/News/all.SCORE and see nearly no spam on
emacs-devel, emacs-pretest-bugs, etc.:

  ("xref" ("gmane.spam.detected" -99999 nil r)))

Of course this only works if you are reading those lists via
Gmane. (c;
