So what?  If this would be about realism, you could just get outside,
shoot a photo of such a sign and put that in.  (In the larger versions
you could stand beside the sign and make a grim face.)

Most of the Gnome 1.x XPM icons had sharp black borders (see
<URL:http://web.archive.org/web/20000817013044/tigert.gimp.org/gnome/gnome-stock/>)
and many of the current ones have, too (though not that sharp).
