I did so, but, opening Emacs simply with `$ emacs' the scim toolbar
doesn't appear at all; instead, opening Emacs with `$ LC_CTYPE=it_IT.UTF-8'
the scim toolbar appears but chinese characters are not correctly input;
the same with `$ LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8 emacs'.
I need to input both simplified and traditional chinese together with Italian
characters,
among which the accented vocals (à, è, ì, etc.). Any hint?

Thanks to Mike too: I added that line to .emacs,
alone or together with the one suggested by Kai, but it was even worse:
I got other strange characters (vocals with umlaut, etc).

What's the difference between the three (mule-ucs, mule-gbk and emacs-unicode-2),
I mean what will the best solution be in my case?
