(no subject)

I'm using Debian linux (sarge). Only got into linux recently so not a very 
experienced user.
Wanted to do some basic shell scripting so downloaded xemacs 21.4. 
(patch17).
Used debian package manager, apt-get install etc.
I can run xemacs, but the word scratch appears in the top left hand corner, 
flashing on and off.
Similarly the bold blue text (Xemacs) is doing likewise.
The functionallity of the program seems ok, wrote a script, ran a script, 
saved it etc.
Hope you can help.
