My problem was finding a monospace font that's both large enough
to read and small enough to fit 80 columns across the screen.  At
the time I started using Lucid Emacs the problem was exacerbated
by large monitors costing US$2000+.  This meant I had to cope
with 15" displays, which severely limited my font choices.  Since
then the price of large monitors has fallen 75%, so the problems
I had in the mid-1990's have mostly gone away.
