preceding items in file history

Hi,

This is probably quite easy to solve but I couldn't find any answers
online. Every time I load XEmacs I expect to find old file names Ive
been editing with C-x C-f but when I try and cycle through the list I
get this response:

"No preceding item in file-name history."

Is there a simple fix for this that I can put in my custom.el file ?

I'm using version 21.4 if that makes a difference.
