In that case, we should crank up the pain now, so that you'll have
strong incentive to optimize those bignums!  0.5 * :-)

Of course unless something _really_ bizarre happens, there will be
satisfactory 30-bit solutions to any Unicode issues.  So you can
surely keep your bit.  But 1GB text files are not unheard of any more,
and 1GB tarfiles are commonplace, I have a couple of those myself
(gzipped to less than 1GB, but uncompressed about 2.5GB).

In late-breaking news, GNU Emacs now has 29-bit integers.  It's a
horserace, guys!
