I tried applying 5 volts to the shorted data line and it blew the short away. It didn't last long enough to heat anything up, so the cause of the short is still a mystery. I still have some more work to do on the board, but at least the short is gone. That's a handy trick, thanks!

  Or, just to take this a bit farther. Use one of those laser temperature probes to check the temp of all the IC's connected to D3. Im not sure how accurate they are but it would sure save a small blister. It would actually be interesting to see a specific IC jump in temp due to that.

    Yep, I usually just use a clip lead to the end of a capacitor if available, then have a pointy tip on the end of the wire and put it on convenient point of the note.  It may get really hot, so wear glasses and smell for the hot chip before burning the piss out of your hand.
