scripting GUI apps for better workflow

I'm looking for some clues on ways to automate some simple tasks in a
GUI app. Specifially, when working on a .fla file in Flash MX, I want
to be able to do one click/keystroke, and automatically:

* do "p4 edit xxx.fla" on the .fla file (i.e. the source document file)

* do "p4 edit xxx.swf" on the target .swf file (i.e. the exported file)

* have Flash MX do the export to a certain directory (which normally
  involves a half-dozen clicks/keystrokes)

Flash MX doesn't seem to have any programmability built into it. I
know there are macro recorders, and I've heard some people talk about
scripting with COM, but that is all pretty new to me, so I'd
appreciate any clues about whether/how to try this.
