Hi everyone! I'm interested in joining the gaming industry as a programmer. I don't really have a special field, I know a little bit of everything, but mostly 3D/Engine programming. I have a Bachelor's Degree, but not a good portfolio to show at job applications and such. I know that this list (at least use to have) many people in the industry and I have a couple of questions. Answer to the list or e-mail me privatly. Things I'm curious about: -Do you have any tips and tricks for demos and applications to show? Any area that is extra interesting? -What do you look at in a demo for a programmer? Programmers' art sucks (at least mine does), so texture wise it won't be very appelling :( -What status does a mod for example Half-Life 2 have? Do you even look at it? :) -Is OpenGL/Direct3D-knowledge important? A lot of job ads have Direct3D-knowledge as a requirement, but if one knows OpenGL, I'm think it's not too hard to learn Direct3D. I have a couple of demo ideas that doesn't require too much textures/animations for the models and I hope I can find free models for them :) - Half-Life 2-mod: Custom weapons, changed AI-behaivour - Two (or more) racing demo (no user interaction or as an option) on a small track - Fighting scene for an RPG demo with lots of effects weapon effects ;) - 3D editor with some special capabilities I have in mind (this one requires a LOT of work) - Quake 3 level fly-by-demo Any comments on the demo ideas? Some better that the other? Anyway... I know that this list has been "dead" for quite some time, but one can only ask and hope the void answers... Thanks in advance! /Gregor (I'm willing to relocate and don't hesitate to send a job interview my way ;) ) ----- FAQ and OpenGL Resources at: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Hills/9956/OpenGL -- Author: Gregor Brunmar INET: [email protected] Fat City Hosting, San Diego, California -- http://www.fatcity.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message to: [email protected] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB OPENGL-GAMEDEV-L (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from).
