I understand that the macro system allows you to do this, but I didn’t know that you could inspect a lambda via list processing functions.

Yes, you can! That's the whole point of the argument!
Additionally, the LISP macro system(s) generally take this to extremes, as well.
It makes creating LISP Jits a little more challenging, though (but not impossible).
