Score 1 for the Microsoft marketing machine.  Well hey let's face it,
Sun had (has?) it's "Java for games" initiative and at least from a 3D
standpoint, I've not seen a reason to care.  I guess when you
strategically control a gaming platform you can make more things
happen.  Somehow the web has never become a hotbed of Java 3D.
