If you weren't adequately informed about the topic at hand (whether C# + Mono is a viable scripting solution due to the availability of a REPL and loading scripts on the fly) and you knew it, why did you choose to respond in the first place? That's just asking to be ripped on for trolling, because, well, it is. Also, going back to whether .NET languages should even be chosen over Lua, the dominant scripting solution, there are Lua .NET solutions out there. It's not like by choosing to support C# (which means you should be able to CLI theoretically use any .NET language), doesn't mean you're dropping support for Lua. Instead, you're actually just opening up the options to the dozens of .NET languages out there (C#, F#, Boo, Nemerle, IronPython, IronRuby, Io, Lua, Scheme, ect..) ________________________________ From: Brandon Van Every <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, May 27, 2010 4:10:18 PM Subject: Re: [Sweng-Gamedev] F# fsharp On Thu, May 27, 2010 at 2:28 PM, Miguel de Icaza <[email protected]> wrote: >> Since you like toasty comments... why are Mono features >> important to a Windows developer? > > I am not sure if you are genuinely interested in an answer of if you are > trolling as usual. > So let me preface my answer with the fact that I have not surveyed every > Mono user on Windows and that my answer is limited to what some developers > have chosen to share with me. Miguel, my view is you chose to be rude because I didn't happen to read up on every detail of your Mono universe, on a day that frankly I had other things to do. It's not a given to me that I would want to incorporate Mono into a Windows-only development toolchain. It's great that Mono's out there, but we are not all cross-platform developers all the time. Incorporating a variety of implementations into a toolchain has advantages and disadvantages. Yes I had a genuine interest in your answer, not the least of which was to see if you accept that Mono isn't everything to everybody, but also in what cases some developers think MS + Mono is more compelling than MS alone. From a tools standpoint, MS ships an interpreter for F# out of the box, in Visual Studio 2010. This was also just one laundry list item as to why I think F# is a better scripting language than C#.
