Bill:  More pessimism!  How do you manage to wake up every morning?

Mark: happy in the peace of God, since you demand me to answer.

Bill:  Gee, it
must suck being you if all you can do is look at the dark side of life.

Mark: I see the plight of the world beset by greed and liars.

Bill:  Life is good and getting better.

Mark: Really?

Bill:   The human species continues to
improve.


Mark:  We change but we do not improve. You are being unrealistic.

Bill:  We're not perfect, but I'd like to think humankind is better
today than it was, say, 50 years ago.

Mark: You might like to think it, but the newspapers tell a different story. 
I rather doubt things are better in many ways than 50 years ago, more 
comfortable for us who are comparatively wealthy perhaps.  But I would not 
say over all we are better off .  No we're not perfect, about the only thing 
you got right.  We are greedy, lusty, and murderous, more acceptably so than 
50 years ago.
