From what I've heard, the rumor got out to go to the convention center for assistance, but no official ever came out and said it. People showed up there, but it was not a planned distribution point because they've been telling everyone who will listen that they want EVERYONE out of the city. So these people swamp the convention center, sit and wait. There's a perfectly good road for them to walk down to go to where there's help, but they just sit there and complain, even AFTER they've been told that everyone needs to get out of the city. I can understand the old, the feeble, the handicapped, etc. But able bodied people standing around waiting for government to come take care of them. Assinine isn't a strong enough word. But then again, the local government told 20,000 people to pack a stadium knowing full well that there'd be no water, no food, and since they're at or below sea level, no toilets once the electricity went out. Add to that by not putting sufficient police presence, and also get the idea that the roof will stay on that massive structure and you have a recipe for disaster. FEMA is snapping to pretty quickly, I think. Mississippi and Alabama got creamed too, but their states seem to have a handle on the problems, and there have been few cases of "chaos" in those states. 1.5 million in Florida were without water or electricity after Katrina's first strike, but within hours order was restored and within days water and power were back in most areas. My point is that FEMA is doing well in areas that had a plan and some preparation. It doesn't do well when local and state governments drop the ball. -- Bill Highfield St Cloud, Florida, USA!
