I'm not sure if I count as Old Guard or Seasoned Veteran; where does
Summer '99/Game #450, fit in?
As far as willing to play/GM, I have enough obligations to limit my
participation two a game or two at a time, and as I'm currently
getting my butt handed to me in the DW tournament at the moment, I
think that's enough. Though as me once they've ended/I've been
eliminated.
To address, in tangent, some of Hugh's suggestions in the original
topic from a slightly different viewpoint...
The reason the DipKnights were formed was because some of us saw a
need for them. They (well, We, since I was one of the three founders)
aren't separate from Cat23, really; just a subset thereof. So
suggesting that DKs and Cat23 should merge would be like saying your
left collarbone should become part of your body. Already is part, and
it's doing its own particular job quite well, insofar as it is needed.
What was their (DK's) purpose? There'd been a spate of abandonments.
A couple of us didn't like it. We wanted to be able to form games
with people who could be counted upon. The DKs are that list, more or
less.
Cat23 itself is a huge, massless, headless, multi-celled amoeba.=20
There's no requirements to join, no rules to have to follow "or else,"
no limits onto what sort of games you want to run/participate in. The
rules of each and every game are entirely up to the GM, and if the
players decide that they don't like it, they can leave that particular
game, and there's really no consequences to any of it (beyond word of
mouth, and even that is negligible). The epitome of cyberspace, in
that regard, I suppose. Might be considered, to borrow from Heinlein,
a form of rational anarchy.
Want higher quality of competition? Try the subset, Academy
(assuming they're around still?). Want players who won't quit? Try
the other subset, DKs. Want to start rating games, or some other sort
of thing? Find some like-minded persons to help you start it out; I'd
recommend at least 3 to start, including (for a ratings group in
particular) someone who knows how to program all the websites
necessary, and at least one person with a penchant for mathematics and
who's familiar with multiple different ratings systems already in
existence who can give you an idea of what is out there if you simply
want to use them, or enough foundations to borrow from the others to
create your own version. (*ahem* Tangentially, did I ever mention the
time I almost start such a subset myself, but didn't have the
time/energy to dedicate to startup *ahem*) If you don't want to deal
with Cat23 at all, form your own group with it's own core rules and
ideals et al. If you want to stay associated with Cat23, bear in mind
that it'll be pretty much voluntary and self-perpetuating (pro: built
in community; con: fighting inertia), and make do with what you can.
And going off on another tangent, why limit one's self to just Cat23?
I don't mean just playing on multiple groups; I mean recruiting for
games from them. On multiple occasions, I've run games with
registration numbers for Cat23 and DipWorld and I think at least one
other group (though it slips my mind at the moment). Michael Boutot
quite frequently does similarly, choosing which system's registry to
use well after he's gotten all the players for it. Open your
advertizing, and you're sure to hit more of an audience.=20=20
Back to the original tangent: Point being, Cat23 itself ain't going
anywhere. Whether anyone's doing anything with it is completely up to
the individuals involved. If someone wants to utilize the tools that
are provided by Cat23, more power to them and even in a limited state
I'd be more than happy to help/counsel. Want to hijack it? That's
another thing entirely, and I seem to recall having been quite vocal
in the past about keeping it an Anarch's Paradise. The occasional
political mechanations which have manifested in those other groups,
shaking them up violently in the complete opposite of Cat23's entropy,
have pretty much made me an anarchistic sort of fellow, in that regards.
