I started out filling in when replacements were needed due to vanishing players - and I had a lot of fun doing so. Many, hell - most- of them were deemed as suicide or mercy positions. There were only a few who were willing to take on these positions and at one point I was either playing in or GM'ing 27 or so concurrent games. Many of them were the lost causes they were advertised as but more than a few times I turned two and three dot powers back into forces to be dealt with. Occasionaly I even turned them into solos - 5 times I think. Given all of that it is hard to nail down any one of them as a favorite game. Although there was one game where I came in as a two dot Turkey (okay, stop laughin!) up against a 15 or 16 dot Germany - he had all of Russia and over through England and he was about to swallow me whole for the solo. Somehow I talked him out of taking me and I convoyed my lone army from Ankara to STP and got behind the German line and wreaked all sorts of havoc. He was forced to pull back and deal with me as I wandered from open dot to open dot. Seems to me my actions may have actually cost him the solo, but I am not sure. I think Deepak was Germany, but I could be wrong on that one. So many games - they all start to blur. I was a big proponent for alliance play but it never seemed to catch on here on Cat23. There was one game where Scott Fort and I played the alliance as I had outlined it and it worked right to the end of the game. We agreed where we would fight and would not fight and since the battle was always at the front we were both able to run all of our units to the front and run over the other players. A huge chance on both parts but it worked and in the end, he soloed. That was the "logistical nightmare" game where you could only the spaces adjacent to your units. That game was a challenge - but very, very fun. Now that I think of it, my favorite game was probably Doug Burgoyne's 666 Paradise game. That game took a lot of thought and no explanation can really do it justice. The game I regret not finishing was the one Mike Pendleton was running - 1182. That game uses only air and land units based on Doug's model but also suffers from the same unfinished game-itis that plagues those variants. To say that I am a bit worried about Mike is an understatement indeed. I even backtracked his website to a home phone number and that call went with no response. Sorry to be so long, but there it is. ----- Original Message ---- From: Former Trout <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, June 9, 2007 9:03:47 AM Subject: [CAT23-Ngame] Imperial Diplomacy - Just under half-full Hi folks, Nice to see all the old war-stories coming out. I was wondering if you guys who have been on the list have any special games that you remember? Whether it was a classic stab, or an improbable come-from-behind solo, or just a game that made you look at the screen and go 'Wow - what a fiasco...' I'm sure there have been a crazy amount of memorable games played on the Cat over the years... I mean, since we're all sitting on the stoop at the Blue Parrot Lounge anyways... Might as well reminisce.. =) Also, I now have six intrepid players who have foolishly, er, I mean bravely signed up to play Imperial Diplomacy. However, we'll still need seven more. What do you guys say? Write me at former.trout@ yahoo.ca with you country preferences. Cheers, Trout Get news delivered with the All new Yahoo! Mail. Enjoy RSS feeds right on your Mail page.
