Adding to the intrigue, I usually keep a list of names that other people
have used, as well as catch-phrases for that exact reason.  I can
usually pass myself off as someone else for a season or two.

Anonymity only lasts until the end of the game, quite true.  To me it is
extremely important to show the players names at the end, as it tends to
act as a counterbalance to poor sportsmanship, needless profanity, and
probably reduces the number of "quitters". Knowing your name is going to
be posted at the end improves play in my opinion.  

And do take care fadingcaptain that you don't burn your bridges behind
you.  I would advise you change up your Nom de Guerre at least every few
games.  If you use the same "handle" over and over, you will be
recognized (for better or worse) in short order.  I try and change up
every game, and take mainly somewhat accurate historical or humorous
personas.  One favorite was a takeover for a failing Japan in an
Imperial game months ago - "Mishinsakin Wiyukikmi".
