I got stabbed by Turkey (F01) and England (S02) early, and spent much of the rest of the game trying to hang on. Every time Germany got a unit or two free, he'd send them after me, and vice versa. From about 1905 or so, it looked like a pretty obvious English win, something Kester and I talked about. So we went for the one thing that could have stopped it - a northern offensive. Unfortunately, I didn't obey one of two of Ray's dictums: play the board as it is, not as you want it to be. I knew Ray would stab me, and he did. Ray on the other hand managed to ignore the second of his - which he went to the trouble to write a whole diplomatic pouch article about - "whether you win is dependent on how you treat the powers on their way out". Julio had so annoyed me with his press that I had to ask him to stop emailing me. This should have been a perfect moment for Ray to press the advantage and get me to be his puppet against Julio, either then or later. At that point even the slightest hint of an anti-E plan would have had my backing, even to throw the game to Ray. But Ray decided to spent the post-stab year gloating, to the point where I was neutral between either of them winning, since they were both so irritating. Maybe that was their plan, so that neither could take advantage of the stab? In the end, the game was decided in 1907 or so -- when Germany had two builds and they were both armies. But Ray managed to put himself in a position where he was the only power who could stop England (by helping Julio take out France and Russia) and then refused to do it. You must be a good player, Ray, but the last sentence illustrates, in my opinion, sub-par play. It doesn't matter that your ally won instead of mine -- we all lost, and we lost because you made it impossible for anyone to touch Julio and then didn't do it yourself. Basing a realignment on my attacking Austria - and attacking him first - was not realistic. You literally lied to me on virtually every turn this game in which we had negotiations. It's like the boy who cried wolf. Honestly, after a while, your press was just white noise. And when I did actually look at it closely, it was usually unbelievably insulting - like it was written to a 4 year old. As for my own play, my big mistakes were in being unduly optimistic that Ray wouldn't stab, in not convincing Eric that an E-G would defeat F and R if F and R didn't cooperate, and in many tactical mistakes. Ray and Julio outfought me more than once in the north. Kudos. I learned a lot from both of you. Kester, I thought you played very well, and I really enjoyed working with you. I'm not normally a game-long-ally type of player, but circumstances dicttated it here, and I enjoyed it. I also learned a lot from our discussions, and you've made me a better player for next time. I'm not much one for sugary-coated EOGs. I'm more interested in writing about what went well (England and Austria's diplomacy, England and Germany's tactics) and what didn't (Germany's diplomacy, Russian tactics and diplomacy).
