Type Certificates? If an aircraft in a simulator has significantly different performance and handling when operated with controls matching those in the actual aircraft, would a licensed pilot want anything to do with it? I'm not talking about "recreational" use here, but about the demanding use of FlightGear for procedural and situational training, providing a foundation for certification on a specific aircraft. As for certification, visuals are the easy part. Compare the cockpit with the actual aircraft and its equipment. Check Measurements. But behavior in a variety of flight scenaria is what really counts. Is it possible to script tests for take-off, cruise, landing, and best glide behavior at various V-Speeds and Stall Speeds at sea level and at high altitudes, with different fuel weight loading? Perhaps with a log that compares the expected behavior of the aircraft with the simulated results? That would be a good start, but you might need someone with actual experience to take a look as well. You'd also want to check every single instrument, adjustment, switch, and indicator to ensure they operate exactly as indicated in the POH or other manuals. We might need someone who flies the actual aircraft to accompany us on a checkride. An actual pilot or CFI. Rate this aircraft: Wright Flyer "Employing "wing warping", it was relatively unstable and very difficult to fly. The airplane flew 852 ft (260 m) on its fourth and final flight, but was damaged on landing, and wrecked minutes later when powerful gusts blew it over." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wright_Flyer So, is the Wright Flyer difficult to fly in Flightgear? What makes it hard? Does it employ wing warping in it's FDM? Is there a POH? If not, how do we rate it? Do we know anyone with Wright Flyer endorsements or CFI certification? ;-) -Pat - A "recreational" non-pilot flight simulation enthusiast.
