That sounds like the only contact points you've defined are the gear - so it's doing exactly what you told it - the gear remains at ground level :-) Try adding extra contact points for things like wing tips, the top of tha tail, the nose, canopy, etc - this will ensure that if it does hit the ground you won't be able to drive parts of the aircraft *through* it.
