Difficulties getting elevated scenery

I've been trying to build some New Zealand scenery which I got from
ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Islands/
I specifically want S37E174 but I downloaded lots around that area anyway.
But I've come unstuck, after going through all the steps I thought I
normally did, I get no elevation data. I get all the grass, roads
runways etc but it's all at sea level. I awknowledge that I'm using a
Terragear-cvs version from about February but it's worked before. This
is what I've done

I have a flightgearstuff directory which contains all the .hgt.zip
files, the runways.dat.gz file (from the flightgear 0.9.3) and a
symbolic link to terragear.py
There is also the directory work/SRTM-30

However I'm not sure what type of SRTM data I've got ie STRM-30 or SRTM-90

From my flightgearstuff dir I've done:
for i in S*.hgt.zip; do hgtchop 1 $i work/SRTM-30/; done

./terrafit.py -m 50 -x 3000 -e 2 work/SRTM-30/

genapts --input=runways.dat.gz --work=work/ --min-lon=160 --max-lon=180
--min-lat=-50 --max-lat=-10

cd work

mkdir Status; touch Status/MASTER_ON; fgfs-tools-server . . e170s40

Open a new shell and go to the work dir

SRTM-30 LandMass AirportArea AirportObj Cities Crops Forest Freeways
Lakes Railroads Rivers Roads Towns

 FG_SCENERY=./Scenery fgfs --fdm=magic --disable-panel --airport-id=NZWP

But the scenery is flat as a pancake. I could use some ideas

 Thanks.
