This sounds like a data conversion problem and nothing to do with the 
maximum number of polygons

I've used 1000 nodes per tile as a middle of the road value ... a lot 
depends on what kind of hardware you have to throw at the problem.

Probalby not directly, but you might be able to import the points if you 
rewrite them in the ".fit" format and let TG retriangulate after it 
merges in all the 2d polygon features.
