Looking at those screenshots vs. the provided satellite pic, it occurs
to me that by transitioning the ocean colours near a coastline you could
help to add some nice realism.

say blue -> green -> brown -> white

with the distance of transition from the coastline determined by ratio
of dry/wet cells surrounding the ocean cell in question. This would make
inland waterways, bays, and harbours look a bit more real, why keeping
headlands somewhat oceanic in color.

Limiting it to a 5km band from a coastline would probably be necessary
to reduce unnecessary computation.
