We had the Through The Ages issue a few years ago. I think that people (okay, at least me who rates it a 10) determined that it was not sufficiently different to vote for it as a potential MCA winner.
I have not played Brass Birmingham, but it does sound sufficiently different that voting for it seems reasonable.

Getting sued for plagiarism is different from the community feeling it is plagiarism.  It might be reasonable to have a pre-MCAs poll on whether a game should be considered under this standard and let the group decide.
I can think of some recent cases where I really don't know which way the group would go.  We should have a rule that a tie-vote means it is 'in' or 'out'.

Exactly.  But the challenge becomes how to quantify in words the sufficient difference for two games to be independent of each other.  

I don't think is the answer but if we were to speculate: could someone create Brass: Birmingham under a different title and not be sued for plagiarism by Martin Wallace?  I mean, if the answer is, yes, then hey let's give it the award!  But we may still argue amongst ourselves what the answer is without a more concrete definition.

I kind of think revised versions shouldn't be considered, unless it is just a huge change (like how Power Grid dispensed with the line drawing of original Funkenschlag).  The purpose of the award is to help people find new and worthy games, and I imagine people who have played the older Concordia or Brass probably pretty much know what to expect with the new ones.  (I haven't played the new ones so I might be wrong.)

First of all, thank you, Larry, for maintaining the fun and the binding us gamers together with these awards.
I did not vote for any of the winners (becoming a trend) and I'm starting to wonder if it's too difficult to play a sufficient number of the nominees now.  I know I can't get to half of them.  A discussion on reprints may also be warranted.  I consciously did not push any reprints or expansions.  Obviously, others don't agree.  I really like Brass, but I refused to vote for Birmingham.  Same with Concordia.  I think there were a lot of games I excluded this way.  I hope I don't sound bitter because I'm not and I enjoy being surprised.  But my concerns are starting to become more pronounced each year.
