Never seen this before, it is possible that you mix up TORCS components 
shipped with Ubuntu with your own version (I think the debian TORCS 
package does not link to the expat version shipped with TORCS, but to 
the system expat)?

There is a known build time linking problem with 1.3.4 (fixed in 
1.3.5-test1) and earlier on Ubuntu, because Ubuntu sets as default the 
linker option --as-needed, see:
