I just installed the latest (src) version and removed all .grf files.
installed the basic grfs, new stations and the DB & US trainset.

For temperate climate the DB set covers all the cargo,
for arctic and desert the US trainset does.

works very well =)
Had to figure out (trial and error) which grfs have to be loaded in which order.
here is my current, best working grf-file

newgrf\ttdpbasew.grf
newgrf\newshipsw.grf
newgrf\cargosetw.grf
newgrf\dbsetxlw.grf
newgrf\newcargow.grf
newgrf\newstatsw.grf
newgrf\4LVw.grf
newgrf\paperw.grf
newgrf\combroadw.grf
newgrf\dbsetxlw.grf
newgrf\trkfoundw.grf
newgrf\harbourw_456.grf
newgrf\jcindstaw.grf
newgrf\usstatsw.grf
newgrf\ussetw.grf

Thanks again for the nice xmas present in form of new game experience

Germany
